LANSING ~ On Tuesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer put pen to paper on a law banning smartphones in Michigan classrooms, aiming to curb in-class distractions.
House Bill 4141 and Senate Bill 495 reflect the bipartisan effort in the State Legislature to ban the use of smart devices during instruction time, except for emergencies, though “dumb” phones, such as flip phones, are permitted. The law will go into effect at the start of the 2026-27 school year in the fall.
