MINNEAPOLIS ~ Protests in Minneapolis intensified over the weekend following multiple ICE‑related shootings, as President Donald Trump continues to threaten invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy U.S. troops to the city.
The demonstrations follow two incidents in which federal immigration officers shot individuals during enforcement operations. The shootings, including the fatal killing of Renee Good earlier this month, have fueled widespread anger and growing crowds at protest sites across Minneapolis.
President Trump has stated that he may invoke the Insurrection Act if local officials fail to curtail what he has described as “professional agitators and insurrectionists.” The Pentagon has placed certain active‑duty units on prepare‑to‑deploy status as part of contingency planning, though no final decision has been announced.
Local leaders, including Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz, have criticized the federal response, arguing that the presence of thousands of immigration officers has escalated tensions. Both officials have urged the administration to withdraw ICE personnel, pointing to recent court orders limiting the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.
Legal challenges are underway, including lawsuits filed by Minnesota officials arguing that the federal surge of immigration agents violates constitutional limits. Demonstrations are expected to continue through the week as community groups call for de‑escalation and independent investigations into the shootings.
