With many high-profile tragedies, such as mass shootings or acts of political violence, taking place with no immediate answers towards suspects or motives, this leaves openings for internet sleuths to go down false leads, thus spreading misinformation. Andy Arena, executive director of the Detroit Crime Commission, told WJR, “You’ve got the true detectives, right? Then you’ve got the detectives who are driven by politics or whatever their agenda is. Then you get the conspiracy theories that are put into it. They’re just trying to bolster up whatever view of the world they have.”
