PROVIDENCE, RI — Authorities have apprehended a male suspect believed to be responsible for Saturday’s shooting at Brown University’s Barus & Holley engineering building, which left two students dead and nine others wounded. The arrest was made early Sunday following a coordinated manhunt that engaged local, state, and federal officials.
Law enforcement officers confirmed that the suspect, described as a man in his 30s wearing dark clothing—and possibly a camouflage mask—was taken into custody in Coventry, Rhode Island, near multiple hotels and commercial properties. The lockdown order across the Brown campus was lifted Sunday morning, though a police perimeter remained in place around the building and nearby structures as investigators processed the scene.
The shooting took place Saturday afternoon around 4:05 p.m. EST during a review session for final exams. The gunman opened fire inside room 166 on the building’s first floor, sending students scrambling for cover. Emergency alerts urged shelter-in-place protocols as over 400 officers and first responders converged on the site.
According to Brown University President Christina Paxson and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, all casualties were students. Initial hospital reports indicated that of the nine injured, one was in critical condition, six were critically stable, and two were in stable condition. One additional person sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and was treated and released.
