EAST LANSING, Oct. 20, 2025 ~ Michigan State hockey delivered a resounding message to the college hockey world this weekend, sweeping No. 1 Boston University in a thrilling two-game series at Agganis Arena. The Spartans, ranked No. 3 entering the weekend, opened the series Friday night with a dominant 4–2 victory, marking their first win in Boston since 1958. MSU jumped out early with three first-period goals, including a shorthanded tally by freshman Eric Nilson and a breakaway finish by Cayden Lindstrom, the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Goaltender Trey Augustine anchored the win with 18 saves, while the Spartans outshot BU 34–20.
Saturday’s rematch proved even more dramatic. Michigan State appeared poised to cruise to another win, holding a 3–1 lead midway through the third period. But Boston University mounted a fierce comeback, scoring twice in under three minutes to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra frame, MSU’s Shane Vansaghi made a game-saving swipe off the goal line, preventing a BU score. Seconds later, freshman Ryker Lee led a 2-on-1 rush and fed senior Matt Basgall for the game-winner, sealing a 4–3 victory and the weekend sweep.
