EAST LANSING, Oct. 9, 2025 ~ East Lansing will be buzzing Saturday as Michigan State hosts UCLA in a Big Ten clash that suddenly feels more competitive than expected. The Spartans, sitting at 3-2, are looking to bounce back from a frustrating 38-27 loss to Nebraska, where quarterback Aidan Chiles struggled through the air but had two rushing touchdowns.
Meanwhile, UCLA arrives with a 1-4 record but is fresh off a stunning upset over Penn State. The Bruins’ resurgence has been fueled by the emergence of sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava and a revitalized offensive scheme under interim coordinator Jerry Neuheisel. Iamaleava dazzled against Penn State, throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns while adding 128 yards and three scores on the ground. Neuheisel’s aggressive playcalling and Iamaleava’s dual-threat ability could pose serious problems for a Michigan State defense that ranks 68th nationally in total defense.

(CONTINUED) Michigan State, however, has its own playmakers and home-field advantage. Despite a rough outing last week, Chiles has shown flashes of brilliance this season, throwing for more than 950 yards and nine touchdowns. Sophomore running back Makhi Frazier and senior wide receiver Omari Kelly will be key in helping the Spartans establish balance and exploit a UCLA defense that ranks near the bottom nationally in rushing and third-down efficiency.
Ultimately, this game could hinge on which quarterback finds their rhythm first. Iamaleava may be the more dynamic talent, but Chiles has the tools and supporting cast to exploit UCLA’s defensive weaknesses. The Bruins face a tough travel schedule and early kickoff, which could sap some of the momentum from last week’s win. Expect a high-scoring affair with plenty of big plays, but Michigan State’s depth and experience may be just enough to hold off the surging Bruins.
