DETROIT, Oct. 8, 2025 ~ Up until the fifth inning, tensions were at an all-time high in Comerica Park Wednesday afternoon. The Seattle Mariners had a 3-0 lead over the Detroit Tigers in Game 4 of the American League Divisional Series, and the feeling in the stadium was eerily similar to the Game 3 loss Tuesday night. Instead, the Tigers’ offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, helping push Detroit to a 9-3 victory and extend the ALDS to a win-or-go-home match in Seattle on Friday.
“I think recent memory can lead you to think that this is how it’s been all season — and it hasn’t been,” Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch said after the game. “We have been a good offensive club for the majority of the season.”
All-Star Casey Mize started for Detroit, offering three innings of one-run baseball with six strikeouts. Reliever Tyler Holton proceeded to load the bases in the fourth, and the Mariners capitalized, grabbing another run before tacking on one more off of reliever Kyle Finnegan in the top of the fifth frame.

(CONTINUED) Catcher Dillon Dingler started the scoring onslaught in the bottom of the fifth for the Tigers with an RBI double, then pinch hitter Jahmai Jones came up big once again with a follow-up RBI double. Shortstop Javier Báez tied the contest at three with an RBI single, but would have more to add in the sixth.
Left fielder Riley Greene blasted his first ever playoff home run to right field to take the lead before third baseman Zach McKinstry singled in first baseman Spencer Torkelson. Báez came up to the plate once again, and blew the game open with a two-run bomb, his first postseason home run since 2017. Báez added one more RBI on a fielder’s choice after a solo shot from second baseman Gleyber Torres post-seventh inning stretch.
Reliever Troy Melton earned the win with three steady innings, only allowing two hits with three strikeouts. Closer Will Vest shut the door on the Mariners’ chances with a 1-2-3 ninth.
AL Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal is set to pitch his second game in Seattle of this series in what could be the difference of going home or going to the AL Championship Series. Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson did not name a starter after the game
