LANSING, Aug. 21, 2025 ~ Disputes over road funding are causing continued delays in the Michigan legislature to pass a state budget.
The Democrat-controlled State Senate approved a budget back in May, though without a comprehensive road funding plan wanted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and House Republicans, with the Senate seemingly unwilling to include one in their budget plan. House Republicans, who control the chamber, have said they would reject any budget proposal that doesn’t have these funds in the budget, while Democrats in the Senate are accusing the House of stalling ahead of the Oct. 1 deadline, with a state government shutdown occurring if a budget isn’t approved by then.

There are only 41 days before the clock runs out on Oct. 1 for the state’s fiscal year, and we are still without a substantive state budget proposal from the Republicans in the House,” Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks told WJR. “It’s high time that they act on passing their version of a budget so that we can get on with negotiating the differences and getting it to the governor’s desk.“
