DETROIT, Aug. 20, 2025 ~ In a critical series regarding American League playoff positioning, the Detroit Tigers swept the Houston Astros 3-0, led by a Tarik Skubal gem during the second game of the matchup.
In the first showdown on Monday, starting pitcher Jack Flaherty pitched a seven-inning gem. He struck out nine batters and didn’t allow a run. Detroit batters followed suit, posting 10 runs, as three different players mashed home runs.
The American League Cy Young favorite Skubal took the bump in the second game and didn’t disappoint. He went toe-to-toe with AL Cy Young candidate and Wayne State alumni Hunter Brown. The two pitched to a 0-0 stalemate, as it took a walk-off walk in the 10th inning by second baseman Gleyber Torres to seal the deal for Detroit.

(CONTINUED) The final game of the stretch saw former Astro Charlie Morton throw six innings of two-run baseball while the Tigers bats jumped on Houston starting pitcher Framber Valdez in the first inning. Before the first frame was over the score was already 6-0, ending in a 7-2 victory for the Tigers.
Detroit is now 10-3 in its last 13 games after struggling to find wins coming off the All-Star break. The Tigers are back to having the best overall record in the American League with a 9.5 game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central as the season inches closer to the playoffs.
