DETROIT, Aug. 20, 2025 ~ On Wednesday, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan named who he hopes to see as his successor in the upcoming mayoral election: City Council President Mary Sheffield.
During a press conference at a neighborhood home in District 5, the district Sheffield represents, Duggan finally made his public endorsement of Sheffield, saying he knew that Sheffield was the most qualified person “from day one” to be mayor. He touted her work with creating affordable housing and neighborhood beautification during her time on the city council as motivations for his endorsement.
“I am 100% behind her because I know three things: She will work to build this city up with unity, not division, she’ll take Detroit‘s recovery farther into the neighborhoods and reach more people, and she will move this city forward and not backwards,” Duggan said.

Sheffield won her spot in the general election alongside other candidate Pastor Solomon Kinloch, with voters choosing between the two on Nov. 4. The mayoral seat is open due to Duggan completing his third term, choosing to run as an independent candidate for governor.
Kinloch responded to the endorsement, saying, “Mayor Mike Duggan doesn’t get the right to decide his successor. The voters in Detroit will determine the next Mayor in November. Detroit doesn’t need recycled ideas or the same politics that have left too many neighborhoods behind. Detroit needs fresh leadership, with the courage to do what career politicians couldn’t.”
