DETROIT, Aug 12, 2025 ~ The Detroit Tigers secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night, thanks to a clutch ninth-inning home run by first baseman Spencer Torkelson. With the game tied at one apiece, Torkelson launched a fastball from Brandon Eisert off the left-field foul pole, giving the Tigers a late lead. The blast marked his 26th homer of the season, coming just moments before a sudden downpour delaying the game at Rate Field.
The rain delay lasted just over an hour and added tension to an already tight contest. Tigers starter Chris Paddack delivered a solid performance, allowing just one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings. The lone run was a solo homer by White Sox rookie shortstop Colson Montgomery in the fifth. Detroit had opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single from catcher Dillon Dingler.

(CONTINUED) After the delay, Detroit turned to Will Vest to close out the game. Vest responded with a flawless bottom of the ninth, retiring second baseman Lenyn Sosa, designated hitter Andrew Benintendi, and center fielder Luis Robert Jr. in order. The win was credited to Kyle Finnegan, who had recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning before the rain hit. The Tigers improved to 69-51 and maintained their lead in the American League Central, while the White Sox fell to 43-76, continuing their struggles at the bottom of the division.
This victory marked Detroit’s 13th win in its last 15 games against the White Sox in Chicago. The Tigers continue to show resilience and clutch performance as they push toward postseason contention. They will look to build on this momentum when Jack Flaherty takes the mound in Tuesday’s matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m.
