DETROIT, Aug 6, 2025 ~ The Detroit Lions kick off their preseason Friday night against the Atlanta Falcons. Even though the game doesn’t count toward the regular season, the reps do. Head coach Dan Campbell made it clear at today’s press conference that this week is focused on the development of younger players on the roster. “He’s a young player that just needs reps, and with every rep he gets better and better,” Campbell said, referring to guard Christian Mahogany.
With some veterans like tackle Taylor Decker potentially sitting out, the offensive line rotation could feature some fresh faces. Campbell hinted at mixing in younger players to see how they hold up next to starters. “We’ve got to be able to move the line of scrimmage,” Campbell said. “That’s the standard.”

(CONTINUED) On defense, the Lions have looked sharp in camp, and Friday’s game will be a chance to see if that intensity carries over. First-round pick Tyleik Williams has flashed some standout plays in practice, showing the ability to disrupt plays and get into the backfield. Campbell praised the defense’s versatility and toughness, a promising sign for a team looking to build on last year’s defensive strides.
The Lions’ preseason opener in Atlanta offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate player development and roster depth. With several young players expected to see extended action, the coaching staff will be focused on execution, consistency and roster-shaping growth. Friday’s game will give them a chance to assess how players are progressing and identify areas that may need further development ahead of the regular season.
