DETROIT, June 10, 2025 ~ The University of Michigan has parted ways with a private investigator firm after pro-Palestinian student activists accused the university of surveilling their daily activities.

An investigation by The Guardian found that at least five student activists corroborated accounts of being threatened and followed, on and off campus, by private investigators from Detroit-based company City Shield, the one dropped by the university. This is the latest tactic used by U-M to crack down on pro-Palestinian protests, though university officials claim the plain-clothed investigators were used due to “safety” concerns.

For about a year and a half, U-M has refused to comply with demands from protestors calling for the school to divest its funds from companies that support Israel during its brutal assault on Gaza that has killed at least 53,000 people. The height of the crackdown came in when police tore down a Gaza solidarity encampment in May of last year. Some student protestors even faced criminal charges from Attorney General Dana Nessel, until she dropped the charges about a month ago.
