LANSING, March 10, 2025 ~ Michigan lawmakers are divided along party lines on proposed laws that would require proof of citizenship to vote.
The House Election Integrity Committee met last week to discuss a proposal that would require new voter registrants to show proof of citizenship, though no official decision was made during the heated meeting. Republicans argued that it would prevent voter fraud, something that rarely occurs, while Democrats said the bill would create “unnecessary” barriers to vote and act as a “poll tax” due to the price of documents that show proof of citizenship.
