EAST LANSING, March 9, 2025 ~ No. 8 Michigan State basketball (26-5) capped off the regular season with a 79-62 victory over rival No. 17 Michigan Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center. Junior guard Tre Holloman led all Spartans with a career-high 20 points, including nine in the second half to lead the team over the Wolverines for the second time this season and extend MSU’s win streak to seven games.

Senior guard Jaden Akins, senior center Szymon Zapala, and senior forward Frankie Fidler all took part in senior day traditions at the end of the game. Holloman stepped in after Michigan freshman guards L.J. Cason and Phat Phat Brooks wouldn’t leave the center of the court, leading to a scuffle before rest of the kisses ensued.

Rivalries are rivalries, it wouldn’t be one if everyone was hugging and kissing,” head coach Tom Izzo told WJR Correspondent Nick Lundberg after the game. “But that’s a tradition that is important.”

Freshman guard Jase Richardson followed Holloman’s performance with 18 points and five rebounds. Despite dealing with an injury during the game, Richardson’s hustle led to the East Lansing crowd erupting on multiple occasions.

(CONTINUED) The green and white started off the game on fire, ultimately building a 50-26 lead at halftime. The Wolverines began to climb back in the beginning of the second half, but could not overcome their early mistakes.

18 points off turnovers helped MSU grab control of the afternoon, as well as converting at a 38% rate on 3-pointers.

Michigan State will travel down to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament starting Friday, receiving a double-bye after earning the top seed and the conference regular-season title. MSU will face the winner of Indiana or Oregon at noon on March 14.
