MICHIGAN, Feb. 3, 2025 ~ Over the weekend, President Donald Trump announced that new 25% tariffs on goods exported from Canada and Mexico would take effect Tuesday, causing alarms among Michigan automakers.
The auto industry is expected to see huge impacts from these tariffs, with about 90% of auto-related exports from Mexico and Canada shipping into the U.S. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and UAW President Shawn Fain expressed concerns over Michigan auto workers losing their jobs and consumers seeing increased prices on vehicles, due to the expected increases in manufacturing costs caused by the tariffs. “Prices are going to go up here, (and) it will hurt our auto industry,” former Gov. and Ambassador to Canada Jim Blanchard told WJR. “Canada provides natural gas, and home heating in Detroit, so home heating utility bills will go up. But the most important thing I can say is this is no way to treat our closest ally and friend.“
