DETROIT, Aug. 9, 2024 ~ The United States has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates among developed countries, with black women three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. The March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies in the United States, has ranked Detroit as the worst among 100 cities in the nation for its preterm birth rate. According to medical experts, more than 80% of maternal deaths are preventable, indicating that many lives could be saved with better healthcare practices and policies.
In a special five-part series, “Dying to Give Birth,” WJR Senior News Analyst Marie Osborne delves into the ongoing battle to provide improved maternal and infant care to all women and babies. The series ultimately aiming to shed light on the factors contributing to the high mortality rates and explore potential solutions. One of the key issues examined is medical bias, which may be playing a significant role in the dismal statistics.
