Feb. 5, 2024 ~ The Spartans completed the season sweep of Maryland on Saturday, beating the Terrapins 63-54. Michigan State men’s head basketball coach Tom Izzo joins Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds to talk about the gutsy win, and the upcoming matchup on Tuesday against Minnesota.

(CONTINUED) Walker currently sits at fourth in scoring in the Big Ten Conference, averaging almost 19 points per game. The Spartans were up against Maryland’s Jahmir Young, who’s second in scoring in the Big Ten, averaging nearly 21 points per game. Young played Maryland’s largest role offensively against Michigan State, scoring 31 points as the game’s leading scorer.

In the second half, Malik Hall was the Spartans driving force scoring 14 points, half of which came from the free throw line. The Spartans maintained their small lead through the majority of the second half, with a 12-0 run by Michigan State with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game would seal the game for the Spartans.

Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo commented on the tough win over the Terrapins in a post-game press conference:

I said we had to play with a little more toughness. First half I thought we did early and then I thought they [Maryland] did. We got every loose ball for a while. I thought we made some crazy turnovers. To win a game that way is not for the faint at heart. But it was probably good for my program moving forward on what I think we got to do.

Michigan State achieved their 12th win at home in the game against Maryland. The Spartans, however, hit the road on Tuesday for a game against Minnesota at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Coverage starts at 8 p.m. on 760 WJR.
