The Detroit Lions Defeat Stafford and the Rams 24-23 During Wild Card Weekend

DETROIT, MI, Jan. 14, 2024 ~ The Detroit Lions defeated the Los Angeles Rams 24-23 in the first round of the NFL playoffs and the first ever playoff game at Ford Field.

The Lions would score on their opening drive with a hard run by David Montgomery. The Rams would respond with a field goal, but allow Detroit to find the endzone with a 10-yard run by Jahmyr Gibbs that would close out the quarter.

(CONTINUED) Rams’ Puka Nacua was virtually unstoppable against Detroit’s secondary. To open up the second quarter, Stafford would throw a 50-yard pass to Nacua that would end up as a Rams touchdown. The Rams trailed by four, but the Lions would continue to step on the gas pedal as Sam Laporta would find his way into the endzone off a two-yard pass from Goff.  The shootout continued as Rams’ Tutu Atwell would torch the Lions defensive backs with a 38-yard pass from Stafford, closing out the scoring for the first half.

The shootout came to a halt in the second half. After five touchdowns between the two teams in the first half, the third quarter resulted in a field goal for both teams, making the score 24-20 Detroit going into the fourth.

(CONTINUED) The Rams would put more points on the board in the fourth quarter making the score 24-23 with about eight minutes remaining in the game. The Lions got the ball back with the hopes of running out the clock, but the Rams defense would hold out making Detroit’s drive last under a minute. The Rams offense retook the field but were unable to enter field goal range forcing Los Angeles to punt putting their faith in their defense one last time. The Lions offense obtained two first downs, forcing the Rams to use their remaining timeout, ultimately running out the clock, and Detroit claiming their victory.

With the win, Detroit takes home their first playoff victory in over 30 years. The Lions advance to the next round of the playoffs facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Detroit fans can celebrate as the next round of the playoffs is back inside Ford Field.
