Motive Investigation Behind MSU Shootings Continues; Names of Those Killed Released

EAST LANSING, February 14, 2023 ~ Officials released the names this afternoon of those slain Monday evening during the shooting rampage at Michigan State University that killed three and critically injured five.

Those killed were identified as junior Arielle Anderson of Grosse Pointe, sophomore Brian Fraser of Grosse Pointe, and junior Alexandria Verner of Clawson

Our Spartan hearts are broken,Michigan State Interim President Teresa Woodruff told reporters. 

We’re grieving, and as a community we’re grieving together. We struggle to comprehend … we lost families, friends, classmates … our hearts go out to the victims and families of this senseless tragedy. We offer to each of them the peace that passeth understanding.

February 14, 2023 ~ Senator Gary Peters talks on “All Talk with Tom Jordan & Kevin Dietz” following the shootings at Michigan State University that killed three and critically injured five.

(CONTINUED) The five injured students remain under the care of trauma and critical care teams at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Names have not yet been released and doctors are hesitant to give long term prognoses regarding their conditions. 

More came out Tuesday about 43-year-old gunman Anthony Dwayne McRae, who took his own life following what is now being described as a brief standoff with police.

Investigators say that McRae was carrying a two page note in his backpack that referenced threats against other schools. Police also say that McRae had a criminal history with weapons, and that he struggled with mental health issues.

Additionally, members of McRae’s family spoke with the media today, suggesting that he embodied an “evil angry” that emerged after the death of his mother, and that he was “socially isolated.

Classes and activities at Michigan State University remain canceled through Friday.

Three Dead, Five Wounded in MSU Shooting

EAST LANSING, February 14, 2023 ~ Three students are dead and five more remain in critical condition after a gunman opened fire Monday evening on the campus of Michigan State University.

Law enforcement from across the region flooded the campus as a manhunt aided by tips led to the discovery 43-year-old shooting suspect, Anthony Dwayne McRae.

McRae was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Our Spartan family is reeling today,Governor Whitmer said in an early morning press conference.

We’re all broken by an all-too familiar feeling. Another place that is supposed to be about community and togetherness [has been] shattered by bullets and bloodshed.

(CONTINUED) A motive for the shooting is unknown. Authorities say that McRae has no known affiliation to the university.

Modified operations remain in place at MSU, with classes and activities canceled through the remainder of this week.

Gunman Opens Fire on MSU Campus

EAST LANSING, February 13, 2023 ~ Police responded to an active shooter call Monday evening when gunfire rang out inside an academic hall at Michigan State University.

School administrators quickly alerted students to shelter in place as word of more shots came from a nearby student union building. Social media videos showed students fleeing through chaos while authorities set out on a campus-wide manhunt.

The suspect was described as a lone gunman of short stature wearing red sneakers, black pants, a blue denim-colored jacket, and ski mask or face covering with a blue and beige ballcap.

(CONTINUED) Late word suggests that a man fitting the suspect’s description was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Reports indicate that three are dead and another five are wounded, several of them critical.
