DETROIT, November 8, 2022 ~ Election Day in Michigan could bring historic change to the state, with ballots featuring three measures that would change the state’s constitution, the first potential power shift for the state Senate in nearly 40 years, and a closely contested attorney general race that could ouster the incumbent for the first time since 1954.

All of this as the largest number of absentee ballots ever requested in a Michigan gubernatorial election continue to roll in.

Over two-million people have requested absentee ballots, and about 1.7 million of those ballots have already been returned,Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson told 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith. “That means we anticipate about 300,000 will show up today at clerks’ offices and drop boxes.”

November 8, 2022 ~ Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson talks with Paul W. Smith about how her team is working to execute a secure election that delivers accurate results.

(CONTINUED)We expect it will take about 24 hours after the polls close for all counting to be complete and all unofficial results to be reported,” Benson continued.  “That’s because our laws are structured to allow a little pre-processing of absentee ballots in the two days before election day, but still all votes are counted starting in about eight minutes [7 a.m. election day morning] … it takes time to process, validate, and count every vote.

For those that decided not to vote absentee, the polls will remain open through 8 p.m. tonight. Anyone in line at 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote. Secretary Benson indicated that anyone who encounters a problem at the polls should call (866) OUR-VOTE.

Election coverage continues all day today on 760 WJR, with our “Election Night 2022” special hosted by Guy Gordon and Kevin Dietz starting at 8 p.m. Listen all day Wednesday for election results and reactions.
