Detroit Zoo’s Polk Penguin Center Still Leaking After Millions in Failed Repairs

DETROIT, February 16, 2022 ~ The Detroit Zoo’s Polk Penguin Conservation Center has reopened for the first time since closing in September 2019 for water leaks.

The original contractor did not properly waterproof the facility and was aware of the leaks, but did not inform Zoo officials. Now, despite 29 months and millions in repairs, the facility is still leaking.

The $32 million penguin center, finished in 2016, is home to more than 75 king, rockhopper, macaroni, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins, and is the largest penguin facility in the world.
