James Craig Talks on Low Numbers of Elected Black Republicans in Michigan

LANSING, January 5, 2021 ~ Fewer than 10 Black Republicans have been elected to state-level positions through Michigan’s history.

Vying this year to up that count are gubernatorial candidate and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, gubernatorial candidate Articia Bomer, Michigan House of Representatives candidate Daylen Howard, and Trump-endorsed Secretary of State candidate Kristina Karamo.

When I announced that I was running for governor, and as a Republican, that shocked some … didn’t shock everyone, but especially being an African-American and being a Republican,” James Craig told 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith.

A lot of conservative African-Americans will not come out and admit to being conservative let alone a Republican.”
