DETROIT, January 4, 2021 ~ A group of Detroit lawmakers announced plans to sue Michigan’s redistricting commission on the grounds that the new congressional and state legislative maps illegally disenfranchise Black voters.
Filing Attorney Nabih Ayad contends that the updates reduce the number of majority-Black districts, and that the reduction violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The commission however disagrees, citing that white constituents regularly show support for Black-preferred candidates in predominantly black jurisdictions. Based on this analysis, the commission felt it did not need to draw majority-minority districts to comply with federal laws.
