LANSING, December 16, 2021 ~ Michigan Congressman Elissa Slotkin plans to introduce her new “Safe Guns Safe Kids” bill, requiring households to securely store firearms when children could have reasonable access to them.

Slotkin stated that the bill is not specific on the method of securing the weapon. Secure storage could be a gun lock, a gun safe, or even placement in the household in a location the child could not have reasonable access to.

Under the bill, if a child gains access to a firearm and uses the weapon to cause injury to themselves or others, or uses it to commit a crime, the gun owner could face up to five years in prison.

Our children deserve to be safe. That’s what it’s about. It’s not about a 2nd Amendment right,” said Congresswoman Slotkin to 760 WJR’s Guy Gordon. “We have millions of responsible gun owners in Michigan. It’s part of our heritage here.”
