DETROIT, September 15, 2021 ~ Tuesday, General Motors CEO Mary Barra announced that GM will invest $50 million by 2025 to Detroit-based non-profit organizations, geared towards education, developing neighborhoods, and creating job opportunities.
“For the city to be strong, it’s about all three,” said Barra to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, and 760 WJR Senior News Analyst Lloyd Jackson, who was asked to be moderator for the announcement. “It’s got to be a great community, you’ve got to have the opportunity to have a great education, and jobs. We want to focus on all three areas.”
Of the $50 million, pledges so far include; $1.25 million to Human-I-T, which provides refurbished tech and digital training to low-income individuals to aid access to education and employment, $1 million to Detroit at Work People Plan and Community Health Corps to coordinate with agencies for health and well-being resources, $1 million to United Way’s Ride United to provide better transportation for workers, and $750,000 to Beyond Basics to provide literacy education for high school students and adults.
“With all of the challenges we face today, if corporations can work in partnership with city leaders, with state leaders, we can make more progress,” said Barra. “We don’t have all the answers, but if we know what’s on the Mayor’s agenda, we can work with other organizations to help solve that.”

This comes after GM gave funds to 57 various projects across Detroit, that the company projected would help more than 250,000 people.

Smith. “There are so many worthy non-profits that we partner with. And of course, you and I know the need is great, and so we are just happy to be part of the solution.”
