Taylor North Wins Michigan’s First Little League World Series Championship Since 1959

HAMILTON, OHIO, August 30, 2021 ~ Sunday, the Taylor North Little League team won the 2021 Little League World Series Championship against Ohio’s Hamilton West Side by a score of 5-2. The victory was the first Little League Championship win for Michigan since Hamtramck in 1959.

To be honest with you, it really hasn’t yet,” said Thorning to 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith and Sean.

Just getting the messages on my phone of people showing me the local clubs and different places, they\’re showing me the final out and they’re showing me the celebration … these people don’t know me, these people don’t know these kids personally, but they know the State of Michigan, that Taylor North Little League shirt … To see that, it\’s such a great feeling to have. It really is, to know that there was so much support.”

Jackson Surma led in scoring, hitting a two-run double in the first inning, as well as a two-run single in the fifth, giving Taylor a four-run lead. Pitcher Ethan Van Belle was another powerhouse at the championship, clearing two bases-loaded moments in the first and third innings.

Hamilton West Side was able to load the bases multiple times throughout the game, but the team was only able to score two runs by the game’s end.

The City of Taylor will hold a parade and fireworks show on Thursday to celebrate the win. The parade will start at 6 p.m. at the Taylor Recreation Center.
