President Biden Nominates 2 Michigan Judges to Federal Bench

LANSING, June 30, 2021 ~ Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced judicial nominees for the federal bench, two of whom are in Michigan.

According to a statement from The White House, Biden nominated Judge Jane M. Beckering to the Western District of Michigan, and Judge Shalina D. Kumar to the Eastern District of Michigan.

Kumar serves as Chief Circuit Court Judge at the Oakland County Sixth Circuit Court. She has been there since 2007, and was appointed chief judge in January 2018.

Kumar has also served as the Chairperson of the Oakland County Criminal Assignment Committee, presiding judge of the Adult Treatment Court, a member of the Michigan State Bar Professionalism Committee, the bench liaison to the Oakland County Bar Association Circuit Court Committee, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Michigan Judges’ Association.

Beckering is the Chief Judge Pro Tempore of the Court of Appeals, and has been with the court since 2007. Prior, she was a trial lawyer for a private practice for 17 years.

Both judges still need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
