DETROIT, May 5, 2021 ~ Monday, Detroit City Councilman Gabe Leland pleaded guilty to felony misconduct in office and resigned his city council seat.

\”Unfortunately, I crossed a line,\” Leland said. \”This sad day marks the end of 41 years in which a member of the Leland family has represented the good people of northwest Detroit.”

Leland’s father, Burton Leland, was a former Wayne County commissioner and state representative.

I apologize to the Court, to my family, and especially to my constituents who placed their electoral faith in me,\” He added.

Leland accepted a $7,500 campaign contribution in cash, as well as free car repairs, in exchange for his vote on a land deal. During the hearing, Leland admitted he knew it was illegal to accept the contribution.

\”The charges against Gabe Leland were a negative cloud hanging over the city of Detroit,\” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. \”With his decision to resign, we can now move forward and focus on the business of rebuilding our city.\”

In accordance with the plea agreement, Leland will not serve any time in jail. In addition, his 2018 indictment on federal bribery charges will be dismissed.
