U-M Student Stay In Place Order; Will Inmates Get Checks?

University of Michigan undergraduate students have been placed under a two-week stay-at-home order from the Washtenaw County Health Department. Officials say the students have accounted for 61-percent of all of the COVID-19 cases in the county and that the numbers are increasing. The order is to remain in affect through November 3rd and requires students remain in their residences, unless they are going to in-person classes, getting food or going to work that can’t be done remotely. Students can return to their family homes if they have completed the universities procedures for leaving campus safely. The stay-at-home order does not include U of M athletics. The Michigan football team plays at Minnesota on Saturday and will host Michigan State on October 31st

State health officials have reported 1,586 new cases of the corona virus and 22 additional deaths. The state has now confirmed 149,392 cases and 7,053 deaths.

A Federal Court ruling in a California case makes some 35-thousand Michigan prisoners eligible for a 12-hundred dollar stimulus check. The California lawsuit was filed in August after about one million dollars total  were sent to 85-thousand prisoners. Lawyers say the IRS wanted the money back, claiming inmates were not eligible for the money. A Federal Court ruling that was handed down last week  said they were. Michigan was not part of the original lawsuit, but its prisoners will benefit from the ruling. They have until November 4th to apply.
