Petitions Gather Signatures To Limit Guv Powers Over COVID

Petitions are nearing enough signatures to put a proposed law curtailing the governor’s emergency powers before the state legislature. Opponents say the effort was instigated by Republican leaders in the legislature. Senate Republican leader Mike Shirkey says the campaign is being done by citizens, who aim to collect about 500-thousand valid signatures. Shirkey tells Paul W Smith and Frank Beckmann the legislature would have 3 options and one of the options, to allow lawmakers let the proposal become law, is probably what will happen. Shirkey says Whitmer would not be able to veto it.  Republicans are fighting Gov. Whitmer’s emergency order powers, which were used to close down the state economy and continue various controls regarding corona virus.
