Gyms, Hi School Sports Back On; Emergency Order Extended

Gyms across Michigan are busy preparing for the reopening their doors and high school athletes are getting ready to get back into action. Governor Whitmer said gyms and indoor pools will have to adhere to a 25-percent capacity limit when they reopen next Wednesday. The high school football season will be allowed to resume in two weeks. Whitmer actually said she still advises against playing contact sports, but is not prohibiting them. After the governor’s comments, the Michigan High School Athletic Association voted to reinstate all sports. Volleyball, boys soccer and girls swimming and diving will be allowed to resume next Wednesday. For the indoor organized sports, guests will be limited to two per athlete. Outdoor organized sports will be capped at one hundred fans and athletes will be required to wear masks except when swimming. Bowling alleys and ice rinks may only open for organized sports.

Governor Whitmer has extended her state of emergency until October 1st. It had been sent to expire today. She says extending the emergency was necessary in continuing the work needed to save lives. Her order comes just five days before the Michigan Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on whether she has the power to order such extensions without legislative approval.
