School Funding Amid Covid

The Michigan House will  take up a Senate-passed plan dealing with the start of the school year this fall. The bipartisan senate version does not mandate in-person courses for any grade level, but does include extra money for school districts and some information on how they will be funded this year. The measure was a compromise plan passed during a rare Saturday session as parents and educators were demanding action for keeping students and teacher safe from the corona virus. If the house says yes to the proposal, it should be on the governor’s desk before the end of the week.
The latest figures from the state health department shows there were 556 new cases of the corona virus and 6 additional deaths. Yesterday’s figures bring the state’s total to 92,720 cases and 6,324 deaths. In Detroit, the hardest hit city in the state, there have been 13,211 cases and 1,496 deaths as of yesterday.
