Where Michigan Ranks In Deaths; Orchard Sues Over Masks

The latest figures from the state health department shows there were 515 new cases of the corona virus and nine additional deaths. Yesterday’s figures bring the state’s total to 89,271 cases and 6,273 deaths. Michigan ranks ninth in the nation in the number of people that have died from the virus. New York is number one with some 33-thousand deaths

An orchard in Northern Michigan is suing Governor Whitmer in a challenge of her mask mandate. The orchard runs a fruit stand, café, bakery, gift shop and outdoor entertainment area. The owners of the Friske Orchards Farms in Ellsworth had received notice of legal action for failing to make customers and its 21 employees wear masks. The orchard responded by filing a lawsuit yesterday. It contends the mask mandate is invalid because the governor overstepped the powers available to her under the state’s emergency management laws. Previous court rulings have upheld the emergency orders.
