Clash On Guv Orders; Latest Michigan CV Numbers

The Republican-led state legislature is not happy with Governor Whitmer’s latest extension of Michigan’s state of emergency through September 4. It had been scheduled to expire at the end of the day tomorrow. Lawmakers says the governor does not have the power to extend an emergency declaration indefinitely without the legislature. A Michigan Court of Claims judge ruled in May that she does have the authority under at least one of the state’s emergency laws. The fight has now made its way to the state Supreme Court and justices are expected to hear arguments from both sides on September 2nd.
The latest figures from the state health department shows there were 514 new cases of the corona virus and two additional deaths. Yesterday’s figures bring the state’s total to 87,403 cases and 6,249 deaths.
