College Town Bar Stays Closed; Tigers Pandemic Season Begins

The East Lansing bar and restaurant that was the source of nearly 200 cases of the corona virus will have to get approval from the Ingham County Health Department before it can reopen. Harper’s Brew and Pub has been closed since early June. Pub owner Patrick Riley appeared before the Liquor Control Commission yesterday. He defended some of the preparations made when the bar reopened on June 8th. But he admitted, in hindsight, mistakes were made. Among them he said he regretted having a live D-J and dancing and not strictly enforcing social distancing. Riley did outline new safety plans being put in place. State Liquor Control Commission Chairman Pat Gagliardi said he would work with the county health department to review those plans before the bar will be allowed to reopen.

The latest figures on the COVID-19 pandemic in the state confirm there were 699 new cases yesterday and seven deaths. It was the largest single-day count in the past eight days.

With the fight against the corona virus ongoing, there is not much to celebrate. But, today is the city of Detroit’s birthday. It was on this date in 1701 that French explorers arrived on the banks of the Detroit River and established the settlement that would one day become the Motor City.

Baseball is back … sort of. The grand old game has a brand new look. The season has been shortened to 60 days because of the corona virus and games are being played without fans in the stands. The Tigers open their season tonight in the first of a three game weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds. Detroit’s home opener is set for Monday night against Kansas City.
