Guv Order Extended; Museums Reopen Today

Governor Whitmer has extended her state of emergency declaration through August 11th. The U-S and Canada have extended their agreement to keep their border closed to non-essential travel until August 21st. Both actions came as state officials were reporting 584 new cases of the corona virus and six deaths. The past week saw a record 34-hundred cases. Michigan has now reported over 70-thousand known cases since the start of the outbreak
The city of Detroit has 7.25 million dollars in new grants available to help its small businesses deal with the ongoing pandemic. Effective today, businesses with 50 or fewer employees can apply for the state funds. The money can be used for anything from payroll to utility bills. Applications will be taken through August 5th and the money distributed in September. Back in April, the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation distributed 4 million dollars in grants to 741 companies.
Two more of Detroit’s cultural sites are reopening today. The Motown Museum and the DIA are following the actions of the Henry Ford, which opened to the public last Thursday. All say they have worked out safety procedures for ensuring the public’s safety. The openings comes in the midst of what is generally the peak tourist season for the institutions.
The nation’s largest movie theatre chain, AMC, says it intends to reopen 450 of its U-S locations. Michigan theatres are not among those scheduled to open. The company hopes to have all of its theatre in operation by July 24th. Patrons will be required to wear masks.
