WSU To Document Detroit Civil Rights

A kickoff event is planned on the campus of Wayne State University today for 2 men who are launching a web site aimed at preserving the stories of Detroit’s civil rights movement.

It will be an online historical and educational resource called ‘Rise Up Detroit and is the work of its founder Junius Williams and Peter Blackmer, a project researcher and research fellow at the university.

Today’s event will be held at the Wayne State David Adamany Undergraduate Library.

The university issued a release saying ‘Rise Up Detroit’ was created to share black freedom struggles in the major urban centers of the northern U-S.

The Detroit effort follows one in Newark, New Jersey, which is where the project began.
