The Michigan Supreme Court will hold a special session today to hear the oral argument over a ballot proposal against gerrymandering.
The proposed will be on Michigan’s ballot in November. If passed, it would create a 13-member redistricting commission to draw the state’s congressional and legislative districts.
The Legislature now draws districts for Congress and the Michigan House and Senate every 10 years. Critics say it is drawn to benefit the political party in power in Lansing.
The group Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution (CPMC) and two people filed a lawsuit against the proposal. They said it would change too many parts of the constitution to qualitfy as a ballot proposal and goes against state election law.
The court of Appeals rejected the group’s request in June, but CPMC was granted a Supreme Court oral argument.
