Talks are scheduled to begin in Tokyo on Tuesday and the results of the talks could have a dramatic impact on operations at Detroit’s Metropolitan Airport. Some 6,200 passengers a day fly on Delta flights to Tokyo from Detroit and 16 other U.S. cities. The Delta hub in Japan is 46 miles from central Tokyo. The problem for Delta is Tokyo’s downtown airport is set to open to international flights under a deal that would favor United and American Airlines because of their respective partnerships with two Japanese airlines. Delta wants Japanese regulators to allow it to switch its hub to Tokyo’s downtown airport.
