Commuters and small business owners along Fort Street in southwest Detroit are keeping their fingers crossed … again. The Michigan Department of Transportation says it hopes to open the long-closed Fort Street bridge by Friday. The span at Fort Street and Woodmere has been closed for repairs for 2 1/2 years and many small business owners along the route say their sales have drop by as much as 40%. When the bridge first closed, MDOT hoped to reopen the 93-year-old drawbridge last December, but problems arose that delayed construction. Prior to the bridge closing MDTO revealed figures that showed traffic across the bridge averaged over 10,450 vehicles a day. The state owns and maintains the 278 ft., five-traffic-lane bridge with two crosswalks.
