According to MLive.com, Marquette Democrat Representative John Kivela was arrested after police witnessed his vehicle speeding and swerving on a highway just north of Lansing. Police say he was going about 80 miles-per-hour when he nearly rear ended another a vehicle in St. Johns. After he was pulled over, Kivela registered a blood alcohol content of 0.23%, which is nearly three times the legal limit. An open liquor bottle was found in his car as well. Kivela faces up to 180 days in jail under Michigan’s Super Drunk law and could face a fine of up to $700. Kivela says he’s battled with alcoholism for most of his adult life and has checked himself into a treatment center.
