Detroit Regaining Control of its Housing Commission 10 Years After Feds Stepped In

DETROIT, MI – Detroit is getting its house in order. Mayor Mike Duggan and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro will host a press conference today to mark the return of the Detroit Housing Commission to local control. HUD took possession of the DHC in July 2005 over troubles with financial records, poor condition of housing units, and grants in default due to the lack of construction progress.

The Detroit Housing Commission has received a full financial audit with no findings since 2008 and since 2010 has met financial and management requirements to comply with HUD regulations. Last year the commission received a passing HUD inspection score for every public housing development for the first time in more than two decades, according to HUD news release. MORE
