DSO Names New Music Director

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has chosen Italian conductor Jader Bignamini as next music director of the DSO.

It signed a six-year contract with Bignamini. He is in Detroit this weekend and will lead a three-concert home stand at Orchestra Hall. His DSO contract starts in the 2020-21 season.

Bignamini is from Crema, Italy, and has conducted orchestra’s all over the world. He also specializes in opera.
Bignamini has been a guest conductor with the DSO a number of times, and the players say they had an immediate connection with him. And Bignamini says he loves Orchestra Hall, with it’s famous acoustics. Bignamini is 43. He goes onto the podium without the score on paper in front of him. He takes over for Leonard Slatkin, who is retiring from full-time director duties.
