Area Public Transit Bill To Advance

A Michigan House committee is expected to take action this week on a bill that would allow Wayne, Oakland and Washtenaw counties and the city of Detroit to form a new public transit team.

Such an action would make it easier to put a tax levy on the ballot.

The chances are good.

Macomb County is not involved.

County executive Mark Hackel has been a transit skeptic and has said he is happy with the SMART bus service in the county.

The late Oakland County executive L. Brooks Patterson, who also fought against past transit plans, has now been replaced by David Coulter, who is a public transit advocate.
