State Budget Battle Cooling Off

The state House and Senate are working on bills restoring funding to dozens of budget areas vetoed by Gov. Whitmer.

Two supplemental bills would direct $114 million to education funding and $459 million to general government spending.
The bills passed by wide margins in the House and Senate. Among the items restored are funding for the Michigan Tuition Grant, an increase for charter schools, county jail reimbursements, an autism support program, and sheriff’s road patrols,

Much work remains, including road funding.

Senate Republican leader Mike Shirkey caused a ruckus during the budget battle, by calling Gov. Whitmer bat-blank crazy.
Today is Shirkey’s birthday. The governor sent Shirkey a birthday cake decorated with a bat. Shirkey says their rift is being mended, with the sense of humor.
