Adoption Scammer Faces Jail

She admitted she scammed parents who wanted to adopt a child and is scheduled to be sentenced today.

Tara Lee of New Haven is facing prison. Although she was not licensed to arrange adoptions, prosecutors say she managed to collect more than 260-thousand dollars by arranging phony adoptions.

She admitted in one case of telling a client that the birth mother had been shot and killed and that the baby had died.

There was no such mother.

The woman had paid her 15-thousand dollars.

In 2 other cases in which she accepted 39-thousand dollars from the would-be parents, that the birth mother had backed out of the deal.

An FBI agent described the case as a terrible scam on parents who wanted to make the world a better place by adopting a child.
