Michigan GI Gets Hero’s Burial

It’s one of the most grim parts of US military history— the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, where Army and Marines battled the Chinese wave during the Korean War, in North korea.
During the brutal 17 day battle in November and December of 1950 American troops were trapped by the overwhelming numbers of Chinese forces. They fought their way out, in below-zero weather. Thousands of US troops were killed.
Some of the dead were buried along the roadside. Many were lost. One of them was 22 year old Army Sgt. Walter Tobin, of Glen Arbor, Michigan.
His First Battalion regiment was attacked near the reservoir. They took heavy casualties. Tobin was killed.

Some years ago, North Korea agreed to try to recover some of the remains. After 70 years, the remains of Sgt. Tobin were identified, and returned.
Tomorrow Sgt. Tobin will be buried in Glen Arbor with full military honors.
The governor has ordered flags in Michigan to be lowered to half-staff for Sgt. Walter Tobin, an American hero.
