Day One Of Strike At GM

UAW workers at General Motors are on the picket line instead of the assembly line this morning.

They walked out at midnight.

UAW Vice President Terry Dittus said the strike was necessary after the union had failed to reach a tentative new contract agreement in its negotiations with GM.

Dittus said the strike would be a hardship for UAW workers at GM, but that they are willing to sacrifice in standing up for what they feel they deserve.

Following word of the strike, General Motors said that it was disappointed and that it had offered the UAW in the negotiations a promise of more than 7-billion dollars in investments over the life of a
new contract and to create some 54-hundred new jobs.

The union did not comment on the specifics of the negotiations.
Union members will make 250-dollars a week from the strike fund.
