Southfield Hires New Police Chief

The city of Southfield is getting a new police chief.

Elvin Barren will take over as chief of police in Southfield.
Barren is a 21 year Detroit Police veteran, with 12 years as a command officer, and is currently a deputy chief, overseeing 8 major units. As deputy chief of Neighborhood Policing, Barren directed several precincts, gaming, the SWAT teams, Tactical, the bomb squad, and traffic enforcement.

He is a graduate of Central Michigan University, and went through several other management and law enforcement training programs. Barren also served 8 years in the U-S Navy.

He replaces former Chief Eric Hawkins, who resigned last fall.
Southfield City Council approved the hiring at a meeting last night.
Elvin Barren begins his new job as Southfield Police Chief July 29th.
